My name is
Tim Rutherford.
I'm a TV news photographer. I've been doing this over 25 years ...most
of which in Baltimore, Maryland.
First of all you should know that this is a bogus picture of me. It
is me...but it's me in 1988. But I always liked this photo so what
the hell. Picture me a little fatter and a litter more bald and you
got me.
In 1997
I looked around for a website that really focused on the daily plight
of local TV photogs and I didn't find one. I did find B-roll.net
which is still the BEST site for photogs. But back then, no site addressed
the grind of TV news. So I created Photog's Lounge. A lot of
you found the site and the response was really gratifying. I didn't
know diddley about web design (I'm still pretty much trial and error)
but I continued to try and make Photog's Lounge a relevant and humorous
site.
And then after
a few years...I just gave up on it.
I mean I just abandoned it totally. I didn't refresh...I didn't update...I
didn't change a damn thing. I felt like:"Well...I did what I set out
to do and created it... now I'll find something else to kill my precious
spare time."
Some readers would take me to task and ask when the hell I was ever
gonna update my site. Local photogs here in Baltimore started to tease
me about my laziness. But I thought: "Hey man...YOU go and create a
website for photogs that is read around the world and then we'll talk!"
But the truth was...I lost the desire.
My real job as a shooter had gotten terribly burdensome due to cutbacks
at my station. Lots of overtime...a family I love...and other demands
had made Photog's Lounge a luxury I felt little desire to work on.
But after a
while I realized I had created a good thing, that people did actually
get some benefit from it, and to abandon it would be squandering a lot
of hard work. PhotogsLounge.net is all me, Tim Rutherford. No staff,
no help, no pay.
Really just a labor of love.
So I set about
to re-invent it and make it relevant again. To make it a website where
TV news folks might enjoy visiting.
Just a place to grab a quick story, a quick headline, or a quick laugh.
I'm going to offer my opinion a lot more. Not that I have any special
insight. Hell we all know how hard this job can be. I don't claim to
be the best at what I do...but I'm pretty damn good and I've been shooting
news for over 25 years so I've learned a lot about people and problems
and, what the hell, it's my website so I'm gonna opine a little bit.
TV news photographers
all need an edge. Welcome to the edge.
I always tried to let my site reflect your views, your
stories,your troubles, with a hint of technology and a
couple of giggles thrown in.
I hope it's working.
