After the Shoot After the Shoot

You've just finished editing the package and knocking out the two live shots in a city unfamiliar to you. Time for some R and R.
What to do? Where to go? Here's what local photogs have to say about their towns when it comes to enjoying yourself during a little down time.

New Listing!
Louisville, KY
Mat George
"When in Louisville, KY, get out of downtown and get into the Highlands! It's less than 5 minutes away to the East of downtown, ask anyone around, they'll tell you how to get there. There is a nice little section with about 4 or 5 really great Irish pubs (that won't break your wallet) as well as several ecclectic dance clubs (if that's your thing), and some really great restaurants, all within walking distance of each other. There are cabs everywhere, so leave your car where you want, and have a great time! This is where a lot of locals hang out. Not your typical "tourist-y" crowd. People are friendly, and best of all, there's hardly any angry people causing trouble (I have never seen a fight). "

"These are the hot spots if you ever have to come to Ft. Myers, FL: Indigo Room; nice dive bar w/a large selection of beers, good music too. Bubbles Bar and Grill: best bar food I've ever had. Cassidy's Pub: if you like English ales, this is the place to go, they also have live music every night. If you go out in Naples, there is only 1 good local bar that I have been too. That is Pelican Larry's Bar and Grill. If you're into high end drinking, you should head to the 5th Ave. district. THey have a couple of Irish Pubs and a few other bars. VERY PRICEY!! "

Cincinnati, OH
Curt
"In Cincinnati you should go to Miltons, Very close to 3 of the 5 stations in town. It's pretty low-key so you don't have the dumb ass 21yr olds power drinking. It's easy to relax after a long day of work."
Paihia, New Zealand
Clark from Shea's Rockin World Tour
"Twilight Zone" insanely fresh fish, they just opened (2005) so they don't know they could charge much more... washed down with one of the excellent local brews from the grocery accross the way. Say HEY to Tilly for me."
Kansas City Metroplex
Eric J Smith
"Thursday nights go to Jilly's at 19th and Broadway. Good funk, some latin, DJ that's a good time. Usually a 20's and 30's crowd. Open until 1:30am.

Monday nights go to The Brick at 18th and McGhee. 6pm to 9pm you will find "Brother Ike's Rural Grit Happy Hour". Jam session for bluegrass, folk, blues, honkeytonk musicians. Bring your instrument if you want to join in. Home made instruments more than welcome. Between 9pm and 10pm, go eat at Grinders on 18th Street between Oak and Locust. Good eats.

Then head back to the Brick by 10pm for Brodioke. Kareokie hosted by local musician/drink slinger Brodie. Brodioke draws a very diverse crowd of all ages and races...and everyone has a good time. This'll be the funnest Kareoke you've ever been to...bring your crew. The Brick closes at 3am. Any other night, besides Sunday, the Buzzard Beach is a great dive with a great and diverse CD collection. All kinds end up here at this close at 3am bar. Cheap drinks. A lot of film/video industry people frequent here when they're wanting a laid back night. If you go out, look me up! "

Muscle Shoals, ALA.

"I used to work in Montreal sometimes for WPTZ Plattsburgh, NY and we would go to Brewtopia which is on Crescent street on the south side of St. Catherine...Awesome bar with microbrew and free shuffleboard on third floor. Everytime we go back it is the place to meet."
East Texas
Philip Stauts
"When traveling in East Texas between Dallas and Shreveport, La go to the "Country Tavern" on Hwy 31 east. The ribs and Bar-b-Que are simply the best and will literally fall off the bone. It's near Kilgore,Texas, in between Tyler and Longview "

Montreal, Quebec, Canada John Laberge CFCF-TV
"NO MATTER WHAT YOU LIKE YOU CAN FIND IT HERE. THERE ARE LITTLE POCKETS OF BARS, RESTAURANTS,DANCE CLUBS AND STRIP BARS . AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE ONE SECTION ANOTHER IS JUST A QUICK SUBWAY (WE CALL IT LE METRO) RIDE AWAY. I TEND TO HEAD TO THE CENTER OF THE CITY WHERE MOST OF THE ACTION AND PEOPLE ARE. (IF YOU'RE ON ASSIGNMENT HERE YOU'LL MOST LIKELY BE STAYING AT A HOTEL AROUND THERE,UNLESS YOU'RE PUT UP AT THE AIRPORT THEN IT'S HOTEL BARS.) THE CENTER OF THE CITY (WE CALL IT DOWNTOWN) HAS ALL OF THE PLACES I MENTIONED ABOVE PLUS ALOT OF IRISH PUBS. YOU'LL FIND ME AT A PUB CALLED ZIGGY'S ON CRESENT STREET. ALL TYPES GO THERE...... OLD ,YOUNG,MALE , FEMALE.....RADIO AND TV.....LOCAL CELEBS......AND REGULAR WORKING JOES. IF YOU'RE THERE , ASK FOR JOHN."

New York, NY Tom Cassidy WPIX/WB 11
"The city can be overwhelming when it comes to picking one thing to do, one place to go, especially when food is involved. Here are a few tips to help you decide, and hopefully save money, because if your not educated chances are you will get bad food at wicked high prices!! First thing I would recommend is to pick up a Zagat guide. This will give you a very good inication of what you are getting yourself into. Whatever it costs it will make up in the money and time it saves you. It describes everything about a place to eat i.e. atmosphere, location, cost, quality. I have one in my crew car and I swear by it. there have been many times I've been in unfamiliar terriorty and it took care of me. In fact I usually pick one up at an airport when I hit a new town. Now for the simple things: avoid eating in midtown= 42nd st to 57th st between Madison and 7th ave, Times Square, i.e. TOURIST TRAPS! and please do not eat in those damn chain restuarants e.g. Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock, etc. if anything buy a shotglass and take one of those goofy pics out front= been there done that. They're all the same spend your time on better things.
Pizza=any Patsy's. Wings=any "Atomic wings cafe": Blondies, Down the Hatch. Hot Dogs= Gray's Papaya, dirty water dog stands=( trust me on this). Bennies Burritos= (rated in zagats under biggest bang for your buck and they are huge, tasty, and CHEAP!.) Italion= too many; some of my favorites: Marcos, Patsy's. Mexican=Maz Mezcal. Bleeker st has the bar band seen but it is touristy so expect a cover charge $3-$7. SoHo (that's south of Houston st and that's pronounced in these parts as Howston) you will find a ton of very trendy, very dressy, and of course very pricey bars Clubs: now that is a subject for debate but to experience something you may have never seen before at a club go to Webster Hall or the Tunnel. If the college crowd= LOUD& crowded and filled with drink specials are your flavor hit the upper east 70's-80's between 1st and 3rd ave or the upper west side 70's-80's between Columbus and Broadway: just follow the lines to get in. Enough of that. If you ever get here please do try to see some of the museums, or a Broadway play and of course the usual monuments Empire st bldg, statue of liberty etc. blah blah blah. Please feel free to e-mail me and ask any questions about anything: TC1@concentric.net ENJOY!"

Tucson, AZ Dave Greenleaf KVOA-TV
"If you get a chance to get our after your Phoenix assignment, the BOB downtown PHX is pretty cool... while there check out Leinie's Ballyard Brewery. Without giving specifics, Mill Ave in Tempe (AZ State U.) has a plethera of options. If you ever end up in Tucson and don't know what to do with your evening... drive up to Phoenix!"

Phoenix, AZ Dave Greenleaf KVOA-TV
"Want fun and excitement during your trip to Tucson??? Just get on I-10 West... About 90 minutes north of town you'll get to a little place called PHOENIX!!! The powers that be have deemed it better to keep Tucson a sleepy little burg, and let our neighbors to the north have all the fun. If you can't get away, try El Charro for great authentic Mexican food (this is not Taco Bell). For prime rib El Corral is a MUST but the no-reservation policy means a wait as long as an hour. 4th Ave has a few college-type bars, but is pretty dead when the U of A is out. On the East Side... Tanque Verde Road is called "Restaraunt Row. It has the big chains and a few locals too. Good Luck."

Winnipeg, Canada Clark McCaw Global Television Network
"My advice is to touch base with the Winnipeg Press Club. http://www.winnipegpressclub.org We'll fix you RIGHT up. Opera, Rock, Jazz, Country, Classical, Folk, Comedy, Theatre, Hockey, CFL Football, Northern League baseball, mud wrestling ? What do you like ? Big plans for Pan Am." Your pal Clark cmccaw@globaltv.ca

San Diego, CA Rand Levin NBC 7
"If you're in San Diego, you'll want to hit The Gaslamp Quarter in downtown. Lots of bars, good restaurants (mostly italian), and even a multiplex movie theater. In a couple of years, the new Padres ballpark will be there and it will be even better. If you still have time on your hands, visit areas like Pacific Beach, Del Mar, and La Jolla (pronounced - luh hoya). "

Atlanta, GA Leslie Collins WAGA-TV
"When you visit Atlanta and you feel the need to turn it loose...go to Buckhead. All of the cabs know where it is. Lots of hip and hot bars...Bell Bottoms, Lulu's, Fado Fado, Tongue and Groove, Rose and Crown, The Lodge, and many more. If you want a little more laid back evening with an eclectic crowd...try the Virginia Highlands, Yacht Club, Star Bar, The Vortex, and some others. Good food at Outback for steaks, San Gennaro for Italian. Good luck and stay away from the Underground. Nothing there to see or do."

Houston, TX Brian Hardcastle KHOU-TV
"Go to Kay's bar on Bissonet near Kirby. Almost always guaranteed to have a few media types there (KTRK, the ABC affil., is just a few blocks away). Kay's has been around forever and, while a dive, is a place you'll feel at home at. Other places: Brett's, on Dallas, a block from KHOU, the Aquarium Lounge, or Rudyard's, all in the same neighborhood near downtown Houston."

Denver, CO Neil Pursley KMGH-TV
"If you're "in town" and not able to get up to the mountains... try LODO ... it's short for lower downtown. There are a lot of good restaurants, the Denver Chop House, Sostanzas, Bella's ( I like Italian)... Dicks Last Resort. .. also check out AM 1430 KEZW's web site. They have a pretty good show with a guy called the "restaurant show" and he'll answer any questions about where to go for what in the city."

Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa Tim Zielenbach
"In Johannesburg, the Republic of South Africa, the Full Stop in Melville is a nice place for drinks, and the Pomegranate in Melville is a killer place for dinner. About 5 minutes from the main feeding point and AP bureau in town."

Detroit, MI Hamisi Robinson
"There aren't many places in the motor city to hang out in, most of the spots are in the northern suburbs. But if you are in the city on a shoot, probably covering the Red Wings, afterwards you should head over to GreekTown in downtown. GreekTown is a square block area featuring a plethora of Greek restaurants, Greek pizza, bars and live bands. One place in particular to check out is Trappers Alley, not hard to miss you'll notice all the lights. If you're interested in a good sports bar you'll have to travel a little north to the "Spectadium". If you're interested in a little dancing then you should check out "The Arena". And finally if you feel the urge to do a bit of gambling then take the tunnel or bridge over to Windsor and visit the casinos. Hopefully these places will make your brief stay in Detroit a pleasant one."

Cleveland/Akron, OH Carl Bechtel WKYC-TV
"I work for WKYC Cleveland, NBC affiliate, in the Akron-Canton newsroom. After work, I recommend Wanamaker's Pub on Perkins St. I've covered not only a stabbing there, but a shooting as well. The beer is cheap and cold and the pool table leans just the right way. And you never know when some spot news is going to fall into your lap. By the way, the best quote by an editor: "I CAN'T EDIT THIS WAY SOBER". Just thought I'd share. "

Saginaw/Flint, MI Mike Terry WNEM 5
"Sorry nothing to do in Flint or Saginaw unless you like getting into bar fights with GM workers. But if your stuck there try Uncle Buck's it's a little place west of of Flint in a town called Durand. Or swing by the Flint Office and we'll find something. PEACE."

Philadelphia, PA Jim Friedman NBC 10
"If you happen to be in Philly, there are a few places to hang. While in center city, you may go about the small cafes and pubs in abundance throughout Olde City and the Society Hill areas. Many fine dining places. Just south of CC you will find South Street. A plethora of shops, bars and eateries. Very crowded on weekends and school breaks. Here you will find people of all ages and cultures minding their own business. This is a great place to take your camera, by the way. Just east is Delaware Ave. where you will find the dance clubs, a Hooters and for the arcade lovers, Dave and Busters. This is also very picturesque since it is all on the waterfront at the Delaware River. Plenty of valet parking and private lots. The last place to check out is the small neighborhood of Manayunk. It is pronounced just like it is spelled. This is about a 10 minute drive northwest of the city. Manayunk boasts the trendy restaurants and bars, many shops and a sports brew pub where many live broadcasts take place. It is one of the oldest parts of the city and can be very crowded on weekends. Take a cab here, parking is awful. I hope you enjoy your stay and make it back safely."

Omaha, Nebraska Mike Plews WOWT-TV
"The Old Market is a great choice for after you wrap up. It has the best concentration of good places to eat in town and it has a couple of nice bars where you can go olive diving if you need to decompress. If on the other hand your eating habits are more like those of a basking shark try one of the casinos across the river in Council Bluffs. The all you can eat prime rib buffet at Harvey's comes with complimentary CPR in case you blow an artery in your quest for fullness. There is also a wonderful pasta joint called Lo Sole Mio at 3001 S. 32nd Ave.. The Angel Hair Marinara is over the top."

Minneapolis, Minn. Nick Clausen KARE-TV
"When visiting Minneapolis I would recommend seeing some of Minnesota's culture. I sometimes go to Nye's Polonaise Room. It's home to the "World's Most Dangerous Polka Band" where young and old hang out and drink and dance to polka! (I want to do a story on this place, but it's been done so many times already.) There are other bars and restaurants around here too...away from the big Friday and Saturday crowds. To get to Nye's from downtown just take Hennepin Ave. northeast across the suspended bridge...go one more block and you'll see it on the right. The other bars and restaurants are a half-block walk back next to the river. Enjoy!"

Santa Fe, NM Leslie Collins KOAT-TV
"If you are an art, architecture or history junkie, Santa Fe is great. If you hate tourists and exploitation visit Old Mesilla in Las Cruces, it is like Santa Fe without the attitude. There is lots of great hiking and mountain biking around Santa Fe and of course, skiing (but be prepared for crowded slopes). If you want good New Mexico skiing without the hype, try Pajarito instead. If you don't mind spending $100+ on dinner, Santa Fe is fantastic--check out Geronimo, Coyote Cafe and Inn of the Anazazi. If you want good New Mexican food, drive to Albuquerque and go to Garicas (the one on Central at Rio Grande, not the others) or Los Cuates on Lomas. If you are trapped in Santa Fe, Tomasitas or Diegos will do fine, but there is always a wait. Warning, the people who designed Santa Fe's streets were riding a drunk burro, if you need directions or get lost, feel free to call me at the bureau (505) 988-2923 or if you need help sorting out the miriad of things to do here e-mail me at: LEFrench@webtv.net."

Kansas City, MO Brian Wiedeke KSHB-TV
"Westport usually draws a pretty good crowd on the weekends, my favorites there are Harpo's and A little Microbrew place that is just up the street from Harpo's on the corner of Pennsylvania and Westport Rd... right across from Kelly's (good but usually super crowded!)" Byron Ree KMBC-TV Kansas City, MO "...The Plaza." Hugh Jordan Freelance Kansas City, MO "Check out the cabaret but watch your backside...sidekicks and missie b's.. and if you are working alone a great after hours place is bazooka's."

Perth, Western Australia Peter Kavanagh STW 9
"If ever you are sentenced to Perth, Western Australia, hit the Northbridge area for late night food, drinking and dancing. The Old Bog promises to stay open as long as you are still drinking!! Northbridge has the greatest concentration of night clubs in Perth. Fremantle has a more Mediterraen feel with street side cafes but avoid both areas if a US naval boat is in town. For those who like nude swimming, Swanbourne beach is for you. Cottesloe Beach has two pubs to choose from but catching taxis home is nearly impossible so take a six pack for the road." Amanda Goodall Perth Western Australia "Perth, Western Australia is one of the best kept secrets in the world. If you need a camo or just advise (they call us CAMOS in Australia), give Mike Goodall a call on mobile No 041980 9466. I work for TVW Channel 7.here in Perth. There are a bunch of neat places to keep you amused when the reporters are off preening themselves. Northbridge has heaps of great asian and Italian restaurants. Also a very good nightlife."

Charlotte, NC Jim Travers WBTV-TV
"Ri'Ra' The Irish Pub is a must see, everything inside was shipped over from the old country. The Double Door is great for live blues. Others to check out: Rock Bottom, Have a Nice Day Cafe, Bar Charlotte, SouthEnd Brewery, The Graduate, Fosters and my favorite, Jackalopes with 32 beers on tap, none overpriced.ENJOY!"

Montgomery, AL Matt Barnberg WSFA-TV
"In Montgomery Alabama we all head to Old Cloverdale. There are several small bars there. 10-48 Jazz and Blues but we like Buds bar. There are also several other sports bars in town with lots of TV's and great food. Another place we go is the Montgomery Brew Pub."

Oklahoma City, OK Steve Cox KFOR-TV
"When you're in OKC check out these fine establishments: FOOD- Chelino's (S. Robinson St.) as authentic Mexican as you'll find; Cattlemen's Steakhouse (S. Agnew) The best steaks in town... in the Stockyards district; Beverly's (N.W. Expwy & Penn) Good Breakfast and Great Burgers. AFTER DINNER- Cover Girls (SE 59th just off I-35); Red Dog (NW 10th) The legend; Night Trips (Reno & Meridian) The Samurai Saki House (N. May) Live Rock-n-roll 365 DAYS A YEAR! Bricktown Brewery (Bricktown Entertainment District. Downtown) Beer/Live Music; Cool Daddies (59th&Agnew) enter at your own risk!! The Southside's finest! If you're heading down to OKC for a story give us here at KFOR a call."

Texarkana, TX Clint Smith KTAL-TV
"When in the Great city of Texarkana, (both of them Texas and Arkansas) visit Fat Jacks on the Arkansas side of the stateline...literally on Stateline Ave. Depending on the time of year you can get all you can eat Crawfish and beer. If you don't like the loud music at Fat Jacks, head north to the Blvd. and turn righ to the Texas side. On the Corner of Texas Blvd and Stateline there is a Place called Doc Alexanders....reccomend the Blackend Salmon. But if you are looking to just buy a sixpack of bud lite, you can only do that on the Arkansas side of Stateline Ave! have fun! "

Huntsville, AL Anonymous
"When in Huntsville, keep on driving... If you must stop, go to 'Bubba's.' Yes, it's called Bubba's and yes it's Alabama. Believe or not, this place called Bubba's in Alabama serves sushi. Oh geez... Your server is Leanne, and she is a real sweetheart. Tip her well, for 9 times out of 10 she let's you come behind the bar to get your drinks. Well, she let's me. But then again, I kind of force myself there, too. And when Bubba's gets old, head to The Jazz Factory. I don't know why, I'm just told to meet there every now and again. And if you want food along with your Bud Lite, we take it to Applebee's. Made famous by John Pearson."

Orlando, FL Patrick Gribbin
"First things first. Avoid the tourist areas like International Drive and anything close to Disney. Expensive and the quality is spotty. They don't care. They don't have to. Find your way downtown. Lots of good restaurants. "Pebble's" on Church Street, "Ichiban" on Orange Ave. Good bars and taverns including a nice little Irish pub called "Scruffy Murphy's" on Washington. Should you happen to crave some barbeque, head for "Cecil's". One location on Orange about three miles south of downtown, the other in a suburb called Casselberry on Semoran Blvd."

Chico, CA Chuck Dennis KHSL-TV
"Chico is a very different kind of place...First of all this is a party town..Second, its a college town....It helps if you like to ride mountain bikes and go hiking in places that rival any place I've been...WE have the second largest municipal park in the U.S. "Bidwell Park" named after the founder of Chico...Sierra Nevada brewery is located here...It started out as a micro pub and took off...Well my news director just walked through the newsroom so I better look like I'm earning those BIG BUCKS he thinks he's paying me."

Birmingham, AL Randee Deason WBMA-TV
"Lets start out calling a taxi and head down to south side and we will drop in on Ona's for a little rhythm and blues with a flavor of jazz on top. From there we will hit the Five Points Music Hall(all the stars play there after the concerts) and the cover is on me, since they love photojournalists with or without your camera. From there it is on to do a little dancing at the Studio till the sun comes up and the birds start chirping. And if you still got the energy we can take it further but membership required so call me, I got the hook up!!"

Birmingham, AL Tim Jones WBMA-TV
"All photojournalists are welcome to come to my house when in Birmingham. Well, let me ask my wife first!!!!"

Gainesville, FL Jon Kubiak WCJB-TV
"When in Gainesville, Florida (as many will be for Gator games), you gotta go the Ale House on Archer Road, just east of I-75. I don't know why, it's just where everyone goes!"

Boston, MA Ed Miley WFXT-TV
"If your story is in Boston, MA and you will be staying in downtown Boston, then you need to go to the North End. The North End features numerous Italian resturants all of which are way above average. The North End is just a few blocks from the Fleet Center. Commerical St circles the entire North End and Hanover St. is the main drag in that area."

Milwaukee, WI John Drilling, Jr. WTMJ-TV
"If you're downtown, find Water Street and head north -- that's the main pub and restaurant strip. Also try the area of East North Avenue & Farwell, where the college kids hang out. Walker's Point, near South 2nd St. & National Avenue has several interesting bars. Across the street from the airport is the Port of Hamburg on Howell Ave. -- featuring many German beers on tap."

Cleveland, OH Ernie Ensign WJW-TV
"If you're in Cleveland... You've got to go to the flats... Its where Charles Barkley and Gary Miller both got busted. Also Albert Belle got into a spiff of trouble there... but he gets busted everywhere. There's over 80 bars in the flats that line the Cuyahoga river on both sides... There's something for everyone... Or should I say...someone for everyone in the flats."

Baltimore, MD Bob Moore WBAL-TV
"I don't know about anybody else...but if we here at CH.11 WBAL-TV in Baltimore get sent out of town, you're too dead to party! Example: Orioles in the playoffs vs. Cleveland. Reporter and I were responsible for morning show live...two noon hits with insert pkg. and live for 5 and 6 and 11. But you know we did still find time to go down to the Flats in Cleveland as I think back. Anyway...if in Baltimore and you want to shop and spend too much, go to the Inner Harbor. For real party, get the cabbie to take you to Fells Point and just go from one place to the next." Enjoy!

New Orleans, Louisiana Frank McBride WDSU-TV
"...When in New Orleans many people automatically head for Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. That's fine if you like overpriced drinks, obnoxious tourists and the smells of vomit and urine. For something different, try Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the Quarter. The music is brilliant and diverse, the owners aren't out to rip you off and the people are...you have to see them to believe them."

Baton Rouge, Louisiana Bruce Rigney
"If you find yourself unfortunate enough to have some free time in Baton Rouge, then jump in the car and drive the 65 miles SE to New Orleans. It probably doesn't matter where you stop once you get there, but if you're not daring enough for pot-luck, then call Frank McBride at WDSU. He's on-target. The inconveniece is better than staying in Baton Rouge (unless your an underaged college greek looking for a pitcher of "wisdom" at any bar near LSU)."

Tampa, FL Chris Kerwin WFLA-TV
"Places to eat in Tampa: quick and dirty: Dale Mabry has everything, Hops is very good if you have time to sit down and eat...otherwise, Sam Seltzer's Steak House is a good stop...all of these (along with many fast food) all on Dale Mabry near the stadium."

Phoenix, AZ Drew Sidener KPHO-TV
"...There is an explosion of brew pubs in the Phoenix area. ***Bandersnatch in Tempe **Hops! in Phoenix and Scottsdale ***Tombstone in Scottsdale ****Coyote Springs in Phoenix **Copper Canyon in Ahwatukee *Satisfied Frog in Cave Creek *Crazy Ed's in Cave Creek ****McFarlane's in Phoenix (The best wheat beer I've ever had) Four Peaks in Tempe And with the addition of the Diamondback's Stadium, the Bank One Ballpark (BOB), there will be a restaurant from rocker Alice Cooper called Alice Cooperstown and Robin Yount, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers will go in on a Leinenkugel's Brewery for all the transplanted Cheeseheads. There are so many great places to go in Phoenix, if you're planning on coming, just e-mail at Drewcypher@aol.com and I'll try to hook you up!"

Chattanooga, TN Louis Lee WDEF-TV
"...Take your pick. The Tennessee Aquarium/Imax 3-D complex has revitalized the downtown area with great restaurants and a real downtown movie complex called "the Bijou" where one screen is always reserved for "art" films and they have two THX-enhanced auditoriums. About an hour's drive to the east is the Ocoee River Region with plenty of outdoor activities including whitewater rafting and kayaking on the same river that was used for the 1996 Summer Olympics ( and for the filming of Deliverance). Just to the west on top of Lookout Mountain is some fine hang gliding. In and south of the city are some fine battlefields from the "war of northern agression".

Memphis, TN David Renner WMC-TV
"...For general carousing, you can't beat Beale Street--all clubs can LEGALLY stay open until 5 AM if they so desire, and this 3-block stretch of American music history contains the best live blues scene in the world. If you prefer to gamble, there are nine MAJOR casinos in north Mississippi between 20-35 minutes from downtown. "

Grand Rapids, MI Merry Murray WZZM-TV
"...Any time you're in Grand Rapids on a Thursday night, you can join the WZZM staff for a beverage. The place changes every week, but the fun is still the same!"

Winston Salem, NC Chris Weaver WXLV-TV
"...Freddy B's across from LJVM Coliseum...college students hang...photogs from various stations."

Jacksonville, FL Steve Patrick WJXT-TV
"...for a different, natural experience, spend a day canoeing on the Okefenokee Swamp, about an hour north of Jacksonville." -

Missoula, Montana Ian Marquand KPAX-TV
"...Plenty of watering holes/casinos in our town. Probably the most popular for our news folks is the Paradise Falls Casino."

Columbia, SC Andy Benton WIS-TV
"..the 5 points area downtown...new restaurants and pubs in the "Vista" area, a mixed college and professional crowd... also plenty of Civil War areas for history buffs."

Sioux Falls, SD Collin McKenzie KSFY-TV
"...Sports: CBA basketball(Sky Force), minor league baseball(Canaries)...Nite Spots: Brew Pub, SuiteE, Chammps."

Rochester, NY Scott Orr WROC-TV
"...the High Falls area where there's a large waterfall in the middle of downtown Rochester. Laserlight shows... good food...nice shops."

Rochester, NY Name Withheld
"Lyell Ave ... Where the prostitutes and drug dealers defy RPD and continue to flourish. The homeless around the decaying Kodak-High Falls area Scott Orr speaks of would be good too..."

Managua, Nicaragua John DuMontelle LATINCAM Productions
"...when in Managua, the ONLY place for a self-respecting "cameraman" is JOSEPHINE'S across the street form the Intercontinental Hotel. Casino...bar...dancing...live band and TONS of new "friends" to meet."

Greenville, SC Jay Murdock WYFF-TV
"...in Greenville...it's Main St...Main St...Main St...completely revamped over the last decade, it's now a hodgepodge of restaurants, clubs, and the occaisional bar."

Binghamton, NY Don Hardy WICZ-TV
"...Sports bars are in abundance...foosball is the game of choice. We've also got a UHL hockey team, and AA baseball. Sports are king in this town."

After the Shoot

After the ShootPhotogs in Cities Around the World Tell You Where to Go and What to Do!
Example: "...When in New Orleans many people automatically head for Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. That's fine if you like overpriced drinks, obnoxious tourists and the smells of vomit and urine. For something different, try Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the Quarter."
