My Guys

How have injuries affected your shooting?

Bill Says
Bill Fink

"I ripped a tendon in my knee and couldn't shoot...had to edit for months... and it made for some interesting editing since I was on quite a lot of painkillers. When I was ready, going back out was scary. I didn't know if I could move as deftly. And this was during the blizzard in '96. I didn't even know where the curb WAS!" We can be knocked out with a wrist, an ankle, a knee, the back. You gotta be careful."
Manny Says
Manny Locke
"I take my time. Stop shooting and take care. I'll make 2 trips to carry gear sometimes and rely on the reporter. I think you shouldn't try to carry too much weight at one time. If you get hurt...edit if you can otherwise you just gotta grind it out."
Jack Says
Jack Miller
"There have been times when I've had back problems...you go to the doctor and take some serious ibuprofen. After a day or two it's back to work. I play a lot of golf, walk a lot to stay in shape. I think one thing that helps is to use the tripod. Shooting off the shoulder puts a strain on breathing...the back...your legs. On sticks you don't have to worry."
Tim Says
Tim Rutherford
"I was in an auto accident and broke my ankle and a rib. Had to edit for a couple of months. It really pays to know how to edit in those circumstances. You are still useful to the company. Trouble is you never know when you might get injured. It's the little nagging things that sometimes get to you. A sore shoulder or knee. You gotta learn to play with pain so to speak. But I'm definitely in favor of letting the desk know that you might not be 100% that day. Hey...we're not machines. And if you're hurting...it's best to let them know ASAP so they can work with you."

After the Shoot

After the ShootPhotogs in Cities Around the World Tell You Where to Go and What to Do!
Example: "...When in New Orleans many people automatically head for Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. That's fine if you like overpriced drinks, obnoxious tourists and the smells of vomit and urine. For something different, try Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the Quarter."

Shooters who Report vs. Reporters who Shoot

Which career path is more challenging? The answer is difficult and one that can only be solved by the person in question. Contributing writer Tim King explains.
