My Guys

Why do you think TV news photographers have such a poor reputation among the general public?

Bill Says
Bill Fink

"People see us at the worse times. It's a pretty intrusive job to begin with. Sometimes though, we have to carry around the reputation of those crews who came before us. Others who have treated people poorly in the community. And you're the next crew that follows a crew that leaves a scar in the community. But hey...to know us is to love us."
Manny Says
Earl Torain
"It's because of the nature of the way we are formatting shows. Tabloids are now covering what we cover. Maybe WE haven't seen the degrading of our process, but the public has. They used to see better programming. Now the same dirty thing leads the tabloids AND the news. We lead with blood, guts, scandal. And who takes the hit? The guy walking in with the camera. The business has to change the whole psycology of how they do shows. The end result is that we have to be patient enough to answer people's questions."
Jack Says
Jack Miller
"You're assuming that they do. I find when people ask me what I do, they say 'Wow...I bet that's interesting'. and they're right. But I can understand it when they see us acting like a bunch of hyenas as we do sometimes, showing no respect for people. The sad part is that that's the way the business is...and YOU better be able to deal with it. Sometimes I feel bad about what I'm doing...like I'm invading people's privacy. But most people talk to us because they WANT to talk to us."
Tim Says
Tim Rutherford
"The truth is that we intrude. That's exactly what we are paid to do. To capture grief, turmoil, chaos. We record life. We've been told: 'Shoot everything!' And the point is that that big camera obscures the fact that there is a person operating it. Our individual humanity is lost in the machinery. You are a CAMERA...not a person. If you keep your own self- respect and have the common decency to respect others, than you have a good chance of maintaining your sanity. Even in the face of those who think we are repugnant. "

After the Shoot

After the ShootPhotogs in Cities Around the World Tell You Where to Go and What to Do!
Example: "...When in New Orleans many people automatically head for Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. That's fine if you like overpriced drinks, obnoxious tourists and the smells of vomit and urine. For something different, try Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the Quarter."

Shooters who Report vs. Reporters who Shoot

Which career path is more challenging? The answer is difficult and one that can only be solved by the person in question. Contributing writer Tim King explains.
