My Guys

Do news photographers have to develop an individual "style" for shooting news? What is YOUR "style"?

Bill Says
Bill Fink

"You should have a 'style' as long as ego doesn't get in the way. Style has a bad 'rep'...as if you've broken from the pack...it breeds resentment.Style should never overwhelm the story. In fact, we all should be capable of many styles and know which style will effectively tell that story. Collaborate with your reporter.... use guidelines from your managers. I like NPPA's approach of becoming personally involved in the whole storytelling process...which is more that just adding nat sound pops. The main thing is to maintain the integrity of the story."
Manny Says
Manny Locke
"Yes, because that sets you off from the norm. A style shouldn't contradict the norms of basic photography. It depends on what I'm doing. My style changes every day depending on my time frame. When time is against me, my style becomes rushed...I use a lot of in-and-out of frame. When I have more time, I can get more creative with lighting and camera angles."
Jack Says
Jack Miller
"I don't think that you need to develop a style but a way of shooting for gathering information. To capture pictures without strange or unusual angles...a style shouldn't detract from the story. You should attempt to get steady shots and make it interesting. But a murder story for example, shouldn't be overwhelmed by the photography."
Tim Says
Fred Slade
"Style is based on your experience and how you incorporate it. At an assignment...what do you gravitate to first? It all depends on the situation. What stands out? That ONE shot. I basically use the old style...cover the basics...then get creative depending on the situation."

Tom Wynkoop
Style is something you don't think about...it comes from inside...you develop it subconciously. It's made up of...how you use the available elements and that little extra that makes it yours...when to do it...how you put it together. It's something you already have. You HAVE a style...whether its low angles or a lot of moving shots...those are the elements of a style. The answers will come when you focus on the assignment and process the externals related to the assignment. But it all basically comes from inside. Style is a combination of what's inside you coupled with your knowledge and experience."

After the Shoot

After the ShootPhotogs in Cities Around the World Tell You Where to Go and What to Do!
Example: "...When in New Orleans many people automatically head for Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. That's fine if you like overpriced drinks, obnoxious tourists and the smells of vomit and urine. For something different, try Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny, just downriver from the Quarter."

Shooters who Report vs. Reporters who Shoot

Which career path is more challenging? The answer is difficult and one that can only be solved by the person in question. Contributing writer Tim King explains.
